Course Approval Process

Course Approval Process

Since fall 2008, CWEP has approved 32 courses in 24 departments for GWAR. CWEP invites departments to continue to submit proposals for GWAR courses.

If a new course is being proposed for GWAR, it needs to be approved as a new course before it is approved, separately, as a GWAR course. If the course is an existing course, then it can be approved directly by CWEP for GWAR.

To get a NEW course approved for spring 2010, colleges will follow the dates for submitting proposals established by the Course Review Committee. After the course has been approved, faculty can forward materials to Mary Soliday for GWAR approval.

To get an EXISTING course approved for spring 2010, departments can send materials for GWAR straight to Mary Soliday. Departments go straight to CWEP with their courses if (1) the learning objectives of a particular course do not change; and (2) the course number stays the same. Faculty proposing a GWAR course must send a Proposal for New or Revised Course form to Alexandra Katz, Curriculum Coordinator (Admin 447), signed by the department Chair and the college Associate Dean.

To get any course, new or existing, approved as GWAR,  Chairs should complete the GWAR Approval Form and attach a sample syllabus to it. These materials should be sent to Mary Soliday (soliday@sfsu / Admin 447) by October 20, 2009 for a spring 2010 course. For a fall 2010 course, materials may be sent by March 20, 2010. Chairs or a departmental representative will present the course to CWEP for approval.

When preparing the GWAR Approval Form and the sample syllabus, faculty should consult the criteria for GWAR courses, the sample syllabi, and the sample course approval forms. In the context of WASC, syllabi must contain measurable learning outcomes.
